Since I finished conversion of CBX550 wheels from Comstar into spoked ones I was thinking about another pair of Comstar wheels I have in my procession. To be exact, Honda CBX750 wheels. Unlike to those of CBX550 they equipped with usual brake discs, and this fact makes them more universal and suitable for different motorcycles.
And so happened that some time ago I was ordered to build some custom spoke wheels. Sure, I based my build on CBX750 wheels. I was too eager to start conversion, so I shot no photos of wheels before disassembling. However, here is how their hubs look:
I did all required measurements and on their base I made 3D models of spoke adapters which I brought to CNC workshop along with 6mm 7075 aircraft grade aluminum plate. Result looked very nice:
At the moment I am waiting for shipment of Excel rims and proper hardware and some bearings, then work would be continued. In the meantime, here is how hubs look with spoke adapters temporary mounted to them:
To be continued.
Why these plates so much wider comparing to 550 ?
It’s merely an illusion caused by difference in dimensions: CBX550 adapters are of much bigger diameter. As for the width: CBX750 front adapters are only for 2mm wider than CBX550 adapters, while CBX750 rear adapters wider for 3mm.
Great article. I’m struggling to find a 17×4 inch spoke rim for a BMW K100 project. The k100 rear wheel is 4 stud which greatly limits my choice of wheels. Some cafe dealers sell for £2-4k which is crazy. But landed on a used r1150gs rear wheel on ebay – fab. The front is also an issue. The k100 will have japanese upside down forks these being 17×3.5 inch and 5 stud. I’ve found a guy in lithuainian who may be able to help (with a spoke wheel) but as a backup I can buy off ebay a bmw r9t front hub (that i can use a set of bmw s1000r forks with) and odley a HONDA X-ADV 750 Front rim so I may be on track after all.
